unpolished posts.

 top, asymetrical skirt: Forever 21 / wedges: New Direction, Belk / earrings: c/o Le Mode Accessories / lipstick (moxie, moisturizing lipstick): c/o Radiant Cosmetics

so past midnight the other night, when i should have been sleeping, i had the urge to flip to the very early posts of my blog. i almost write that sentence with hesitation since it means you might be flipping to those very early, unpolished posts (holding my breath); but what i found there surprised me, something raw and sincere. there is something so refreshing about those unpolished posts. even though a few of them make me cringe a bit, the fact that i wrote with no pressure, no fear of someone reading over my shoulder, writing because i felt like it that night, because i wanted to - that makes me smile real big. i didn't care if people thought i was a dork for getting excited that some huge blogger featured me. i didn't care if my photos were edited just right with enough contrast or brightness. i wrote about everything and anything. some of the posts have little or no structure. i just...wrote

and there are days today that i still write what i want to write. i don't allow a schedule to dictate my creativity, but i admit there were a few times this summer that i was in a funk and the creativity wasn't flowing like before - and instead of just giving myself the night off, i quickly, messily typed up a post and slapped a couple happy-go-lucky photos, hit publish and then walked away with a twinge of disgust at myself.

then there have been other nights when i was in a creative ditch, closed my laptop and decided to give myself the night off instead of giving myself over to a robotic routine. and so that the next time i sat in front of my laptop, i found myself writing what was on my heart - and i knew that i didn't write for the sake of obligation. and i was proud of it. i find some of those posts to be some of my most honest and meaningful ones to me and even to my readers.

and to be honest, i didn't even plan to write this post out this way - and it feels rather liberating. it's what i was thinking about - so therefore, it's what here tonight. and since this post is going to continue to go the unpolished route, i'm gonna throw in there that i'm currently obsessed with the color combo maroon and neon green, that when Cher Loyd's song Want You Back comes on the radio i turn up the music and do a happy dance in my car, and - last but not least - Downtown Abbey is even better the second time around! how's that for unpolished?!

much love.
{happy monday, friend.}

  2. I have so many unfinished posts, but I like that because it means my blog has served it's purpose- to document my life as a dancer. Sometimes, backstage scenes should stay backstage, while others are the most beautiful snapshots.

  3. You look so very cute! Great combination of colors.

    I love this post. I agree with you, sometimes the creative inspiration flows and sometimes it's hard to think about what to write. I say be true to yourself and write what you feel.

  4. Ugh, I know how that feels. The other day I was looking at a few of my posts, and I was like "I WROTE that!?"
    And I know it's bad because I've been blogging for little over a year. :P

  5. First of all you are stunning! Love these fallish tones.
    Second, unpolished posts are often the most endearing. Its good to take a step back and remind yourself that creativity and authenticity is never forced.
    Love this post Ilene:)

  6. Ka-yoooot skirt. <3 I really need one.

    I've read through my first posts too - I was so ridiculous! A part of me wants to delete those old posts so no one will see them, yet another part of be loves my unabashedly cheesy and hyper self...

  8. It's funny because the majority of my outfit posts have nothing to do with what I write other than my current thoughts. Sometimes we just need an outlet, even if it is all rambles. I love the colorblocking!

  16. I'm feeling a huge need to go back to basics. I'm celebrating my 5 year blogiversary in November and I want to go back to when I wrote like my blog was diary. Hopefully I can find that again!
