when a song gives you a flashback...

i haven't sung in a choir since college days when i was part of a gospel choir, but this morning dad i volunteered me to sing with the church choir. it was a one time thing where they have some of the congregation join the regular choir. and i was surprised but i actually enjoyed myself.

and we sang the following song this morning. it brought me back to the philippines, to my team, and to the faces of the women and youth we were privileged to serve.

Savior, He can move the moutains.
my God is mighty to save.
He is mighty to save.
forever, author of salvation.
He rose and conquered the grave,
Jesus conquered the grave.

so take me as you find me,
all my fears and failures,
fill my life again.
i give my life to follow
everything I believe in,
now i surrender.
lyrics by Hillsong, Mighty to Save

we sang this song at camp nearly every day. it's almost like our team theme song. every time i hear it, it's like a flashback to the warmth of the Philippine sunshine and the laughter of the girls in my cabin and the ache in my chest seeing the urban poverty. ryan loves it there too. we not only love the country (or the food), but we love the people and the friends that we made - and pretty much all of my extended family is there, too. we hope to go back one of these days.

who knows? maybe i'll be blogging from there in the years to come.

[happy sunday, friend.]

  1. awww what a sweet post!!! and wow, that would be sooo cool if you and ryan could go back there someday! i love going back to taiwan but i'm not sure i'd be ready to live or settle down there, maybe just for a few months or year or so!!! but i think it's awesome to be able to experience living in another country for awhile!! xo

  2. beautiful lyrics - very uplifting! isn't amazing that despite the desolate conditions, people still smile and appreciate the little things that they do have. you are very fortunate to see this, it makes you value life even more. witnessing and living there for the first 13 years of my life, makes me appreciate my parents' sacrifice of moving to canada to give us a better life. i hope you get to go back there and spread the positive energy that you give your readers everyday. xoxo

  3. Love that song and that is such a beautiful story!
I'm sure you miss it, it would be so fun to visit again!

  4. Great post, Ilene! I haven't sung in church choir since high school but you are right, there is something about serving the Lord in the opportunities and places that he puts us that is a blessing to ourselves and those around us!

  7. I went to a Christian summer camp every summer from 7th grade until I graduated high school and there are a couple songs that bring me back to being at a campfire there every time I hear them too.
